Featuring as the residence of The Fisherman's Apprentice (with Monty Halls) on BBC 4, The Loft at the Old Cellars ticks so many boxes in so many ways if you are two people wanting a special break in one of Cornwall’s prettiest fishing coves. Centrally located and only 10 yards from the beach you can either hide away in peace and quiet or just walk onto the beach to watch the fishing boats set sail or talk to the fishermen mending their nets. Later on you can actually see the fish being landed - now crabs and lobsters but over a 100 years ago pilchards were the main catch hence the Old Cellars being built as a pilchard cellar. And even later you can enjoy a meal at the Old Cellars Restaurant just below or a drink at the Cadgwith Cove Inn. The cove also offers shops selling crafts, fish and basic groceries. Further afield you will find all the treasures of the beautiful Lizard peninsula and can return to this very comfortable apartment with all the hallmarks of a traditional fishing loft with open stonework, granite inglenook fireplace, original wood floorboards and wooden beams.

Our 14 days in Cadgwith were a wonderful adventure. Anyone who chooses this place for their holidays will know why: it is quiet, picturesque and completely extraordinary. The whole of Cornwall is within reach. The loft is located in the middle of the village – a few steps away from the pebble beach, the fishing boats and the coastal walk. It is right next to the pub but you will not be disturbed, even on the frequent music evenings. There is ample space for two, even in rainy weather. The bathroom with shower is very small, but OK. The bed is narrow but we both slept like never before. The décor is rustic, functional – everything works. You can stop in front of the fishing boats to unload and the car is left in a car park about 500 metres away – it is safe there and the easy path soon becomes part of the daily routine. We would be happy to come back sometime and stay in the loft again. The windows are very small and it was sometimes hard to tell what the weather was doing. And there was no outside seating area, but we just went and sat on a bench on the Todden – a rock that divides the beaches.

We had a lovely stay at The Loft. It was cosy and warm with the woodburner and we loved being so near the beach. The local people were friendly and helpful, including the owners of The Loft, who generously left us wine, logs, kindling etc. Although the pub was so close, we were not bothered by any noise at all. We did find the shower and shower room quite restrictive in size, but this would not be easy to rectify!
